Nejnavštěvovanější historickou památkou Švýcarska se stal hrad Chillon. A ne náhodou. Tato dominanta ležící na ostrůvku v Ženevském jezeře totiž má opravdu co nabídnout. Zaujala ostatně i významné literáty – Lord Byron o místním žaláři sepsal poému Vězeň Chillonský, inspirovali se zde i Victor Hugo či Jean-Jacques Rousseau.
Hrad Chillon pochází z 12. století a je jednou z nejlépe zachovaných památek z tohoto období v celé Evropě. Naštěstí nikdy nedošlo k jeho poničení – a to i přesto, že pokusů o jeho dobytí bylo hned několik. K jeho výbornému stavu přispělo i to, že byl po celou dobu obývaný a jeho majitelé dělali vše pro to, aby ho udržovali.

Chillon vás zaujme už na první pohled. Díky své rozloze, která se postupem času neustále rozšiřovala, působí, jako kdyby vystupoval z vody Ženevského jezera, na jehož hladině se magicky odráží. Prvními majiteli byla savojská hrabata, následně je okupovala vojska z Bernu, která se podařilo vyhnat až po více než 200 letech.
A co hrad Chillon nabízí dnes? Dominantou jsou dva hlavní sály. Tím prvním je sál Aula Magna, jenž byl určen pro přijímání hostů a soudní jednání, a druhým je duchovní sál Domus Clericorum. Za vidění ale stojí i řada dalších místností, prohlédnout si zde můžete nástěnné malby, klenuté stropy nebo znaky významných švýcarských rodů. Vynechat byste neměli ani venkovní prostory, jimž vévodí hned čtyři nádvoří.

Velmi zajímavé je místní vězení, kde byl v letech 1532 až 1536 držen mnich François Bonivard, jenž navzdory římskokatolické církvi na území dnešního Švýcarska prosazoval protestantismus. Podle jeho osudu pak vznikla zmiňovaná Byronova poéma Vězeň Chillonský.
Pokud chcete zažít opravdové dobrodružství, vydejte se tajnou chodbou, která vede z hlavní ložnice na strážní věž. Dýchne zde na vás ta pravá středověká atmosféra. Na hradě je k vidění i sbírka zbraní a dobového nábytku. Místní raritou je latrína ze 13. století, na níž mohou svou potřebu vykonávat hned dva lidé zároveň. Údajně se právě zde sjednávaly důležité smlouvy.
