Když se Richard v podání Leonarda DiCapria při cestách po Asii v Bangkoku setká se Skotem Daffym Duckem, dozví se o tajném místu v Thajsku, které má být úžasné a nedotčené. Po náročné cestě se společně se svými přáteli dostává na pláž, jež odpovídá Duckově popisu. Jen není tak opuštěná, jak Duck sliboval… To je část děje amerického snímku Pláž z roku 2000. Film si získal popularitu po celém světě, stejně jako thajská zátoka Maya Bay, kde se natáčel. Není proto divu, že místní úřady ji musely na tři roky zavřít kvůli ochraně přírody. Nyní se zátoka opět otevře veřejnosti.
Ekosystém měl čas se obnovit
Vlivem nadměrného zájmu turistů místní příroda velmi trpěla, nejhůře na tom byli koráli. Úřady ji proto uzavřely už v červnu 2018. Díky tomu ekosystém dostal čas na to, aby se mohl nerušeně obnovit. Ministr pro životní prostředí a přírodní zdroje Thajska Varawut Silpa-Archa konstatoval, že v současné době už je stav korálů dobrý. Od nového roku tak bude Maya Bay znovu přístupná veřejnosti. Budou však platit přísné podmínky, které zamezí tomu, aby se zátoka opět poničila.
Počet návštěvníků musí výrazně klesnout
Nejvýraznější změnou bude omezení počtu lidí, kteří budou moci být na místě najednou. Zatímco ještě v roce 2018 zátoku každý den navštívilo průměrně pět tisíc lidí denně, nyní v jednom časovém slotu bude moci v Maya Bay být pouze 300 turistů.
Lodě nesmí do zátoky
Zkomplikuje se i samotná cesta, lodě už nebudou moci připlout až do zátoky. Kvůli tomu se budou muset turisté vylodit na druhé polovině ostrova. Také počet lodí, které budou moci najednou přijet, bude omezený.
Nástupní mola i lokality pro vodní sporty
Na turisty ale zároveň budou čekat novinky, které by podle ministra životního prostředí měly být do otevření 1. ledna 2022 hotové. Budou vyhrazené oblasti pro vodní sporty, přibudou také nová nástupní mola.
Skvělá reklama po celém světě
Zátoka Maya Bay, která se rozkládá na ostrově Koh Phi Phi Leh, dlouho nebyla příliš známá. To se samozřejmě s vydáním filmu změnilo. Ještě v roce 1999, kdy se o natáčení začalo mluvit, ministerský úředník Plodprasop Suraswadi uvedl, že se jedná o skvělou reklamu pro celé Thajsko. Lepší propagaci by si podle něj země koupit nemohla. Zátoka se dokonce několikrát dostala na seznam nejlepších pláží světa. Skvělá reklama však měla ve svém důsledku negativní dopady na životní prostředí, neboť přilákala až příliš velké množství turistů.
